virtual beng-beng

The Virtual Beng-Beng is a project made in collaboration with Emmy Reis, Ming-Che Tu and Qian Lu. It is a vehicle that takes its passengers on a virtual trip to different locations around Beijing.

A Beng-Beng is a vehicle that is a hybrid of a car, a motorcycle and a bicycle; it was commonly used in the streets of Beijing until recently  being restricted by the government. A screen mounted in the back of the Beng-Beng shows different compiled video and audio footage from around Beijing, shot at various angles and speeds.

The passenger can choose which of the eight directions he or she would like to catch a glimpse of. Virtual Beng-Beng aims not only to show the different characteristics of places around Beijing, but also convey the passing of time and how rapidly things change in this massive metropolis.
